Health insurers reaping profits at the expense of our health Interesting article in today's New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/14/business/14health.html?_r=1&nl=todaysheadlines&emc=tha2) that discusses how health insurers are reaping record profits while still demanding double digit increases in premiums to further fatten their profits. Not surprisingly, there is a price elasticity of demand for health care like is the case for most things in life. As the cost of health insurance has increased, employers (the real payors along with the Government) have sharply increased deductibles and copays/coinsurance rates. Now that the consumer has to pay more of the cost of health care, demand is falling. As demand falls and premiums rise, health insurer profits and executive bonuses are skyrocketing.
